Common types
Milestone-based grants
Milestone-based grants
Funding is split into milestones. You complete each milestone, submit for review, and receive that portion of the grant when approved. Most common for project-based work.
One-time grants
One-time grants
A single payout after the full scope is delivered and approved. Good for smaller or well-defined projects.
Recurring or cohort grants
Recurring or cohort grants
Grants that repeat (e.g., monthly or per cohort) or that fund multiple recipients under one program. Details depend on the specific grant program.
Choosing a structure
- Use milestone-based when the project has clear phases and you want to reduce risk for both sides.
- Use one-time when the deliverable is small and can be reviewed once.
- Program-specific types are described in each grant program.
