# Grants overview

> Introduction to grants on Boundless: application-based funding released milestone by milestone.

<Note>
  You can browse grants and apply today. Some organizer and milestone screens are still rolling out, where a flow isn't fully in the app yet, this guide describes how it works.
</Note>

Grants on Boundless fund projects through an application process and milestone-based payouts. Funds are held in [on-chain escrow](/concepts/escrow-and-human-review) and released as milestones are completed and approved. Every grant pays out milestone by milestone, never a single lump sum up front.

## Key concepts

* **Grant program** A funding pool and set of rules (e.g., focus area, eligibility). See [Run a grant program](/organizers/run-a-grant-program).
* **Distribution** How the budget is split across winners. Each winning position (1st, 2nd, 3rd…) gets a set share, and the shares add up to 100%. See [Grant types](/contributors/grants/grant-types).
* **Application** Your proposal, broken into the milestones you'll deliver. See [Apply for a grant](/contributors/grants/apply).
* **Milestone delivery** How you submit work and receive each payout. The program approves each milestone before funds release. See [Deliver milestones](/contributors/grants/deliver-milestones).

## For applicants

* Find a [grant program](/organizers/run-a-grant-program) that fits your project.
* Submit an application; if accepted, deliver [milestones](/contributors/grants/deliver-milestones) to receive funding.

## For funders

* Create or sponsor grant programs and set criteria.
* Review applications and approve milestone completions to release funds.
