# Crowdfunding overview

> Launch or back community-funded projects on Boundless. Campaigns use escrow and milestones so backers are protected and creators get funded incrementally.

> **TL;DR:** Crowdfunding on Boundless lets creators raise funds and backers support them. Money is held in escrow and released as milestones are approved. In the app you'll see this under **Projects** ([boundlessfi.xyz/projects](https://www.boundlessfi.xyz/projects)).

## What is crowdfunding on Boundless?

Creators launch **campaigns** with a funding goal and (optionally) a **milestone structure**. Backers contribute USDC; funds go into **escrow**. When the creator completes a milestone and it's approved, that portion of the funds is **released** to the creator. If milestones aren't met, backers are protected by the escrow rules.

So: backers don't pay upfront into a black box; creators get paid incrementally as they deliver.

## Key concepts

| Concept                  | What it means                                                                                                                        |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Campaign**             | A fundraising goal, description, and (optionally) milestones. In the app: a **Project**.                                             |
| **Milestone structure**  | How much of the raised funds release for each deliverable. See [Milestone structure](/backers/milestones-and-releases).              |
| **Community validation** | When the community (e.g., backers) can vote or signal on milestone releases. See [Community validation](/backers/vote-on-campaigns). |
| **Backing**              | Contributing USDC to a campaign. See [Backing campaigns](/backers/back-a-project).                                                   |
